February in Review

Just a quick rundown of the month of February... aside from the Disney cruise, Elementary Olympics, and Wesley's onslaught of extracurricular activities. I tried to talk Wesley out of doing basketball this year, because archery and basketball and Odyssey of the Mind season all fall squarely on January and February, and it's way too stressful to try to do all three. But he pulled that whole, "But Mom, basketball is really special to me" bit, and here we are, juggling way too many extracurricular activities for two months of the year. Which happen to be the two months of the year that Grandma's staying in a beach condo nearby, beckoning us to come bask by the pool, and also the time that Disney runs specials on their cruises.  I say every year that next year I won't let Wesley sign up for so many things, and every year, I find us setting the kids up earlier than we would for a school every Saturday to drive across down for basketball.  Just because we love chaos and insanity that much.

Tate is addicted to tags... tags of any sort on any type of thing.  He calls any tag a "lovey."  And you know when he spots one because two fingers on his left hand immediately go into his mouth and he begins to make a purposeful advance.  He will try out any tag, but it appears that not all tags are equal.  For whatever reason, he loves the tags on the girls' matching watermelon nightgowns so much that I can't let them wear them anymore because Tate chases them screaming "My lovey!  My lovey!"  He usually keeps both of them stuffed in his little Dora Backpack, which by the way, goes everywhere he goes.  Tate also spent a good week wearing this purple plastic key around his neck that opens Anna Kate's little Rapunzel jewelry box.  He has a thing for keys right now.  And Little Einsteins.  Always must be watching Little Einsteins. -BELOW- Carigan was so excited about Daddy Centers that she could hardly stand it!  She insisted on wearing her cowgirl boots, because that's just what you do on a special day.  Even though boots aren't allowed, but Daddy was there to put her tennis shoes on before he left.  This is the part of the blog where we won't mention that Michael completely forgot about Daddy Centers when Anna Kate was in Mrs. Henry's class, was a total no show, leaving AK the only daddyless child in Kindergarten.  Thankfully, he remembered to show for Daddy Centers her first year of Kindergarten in Mrs. Latimer's class, and AK doesn't appear to carry the permanent scarring that I do over the incident.  Michael came home with flowers and Anna Kate has never brought it up since.  Just like I never bring it up.  Especially not in my blog.

It may be February, but someone is still a big fan of his glow-in-the-dark Halloween pajamas!^  -BELOW- Amazon boxes... like having a spanking new toy delivered to your door on a weekly basis.  Back in my day, we had to wait until Christmas to get a shiny new box.  (The sweet thing is I didn't stage this. Mailman came, Carigan commandeered the box, dragged it outside with Tate on her heels and 20 minutes later they were still just chattering away snuggled together in their box).

The day before we left for the cruise it would have been a really great idea for me to be home packing, but instead I was with my whole crew at Chuck E. Cheese.  Packing would have normally trumped birthday party, but this was a Varnum birthday party, and all Varnum birthdays must be observed in this house.  So says Anna Kate.  ;-)  It was a surprise party for Isabel, and as you can see, she was really surprised!  It's been a long long time since I've been to Chuck E. Cheese and I don't think Tate had any memory of it.  He was intrigued by the giant rat.

The kids were off school the Monday after the cruise and we really struggled to find a free weekend to go visit Grandma at her beach condo. So we got home from the cruise Saturday morning, dropped all eight pieces of luggage on my bedroom floor, and pointed our car back to the beach.  Michael was heading out of town the next day and we had to leave Wesley with Hyatt because he had a required four hour OM practice on Monday.  Thanks to Khaysy for being backup mom for me!  The kids got to spend the weekend at Mom's condo while Michael and I were traveling to Steve's funeral in Tennessee, so they were thrilled to be back and acted like they owned the joint. Sunday was Valentine's Day.  Michael was in Gainesville.  Wesley was with Hyatt.  Tate wasn't feeling great so we had a Carigan & Anna Kate-run church service, where were were instructed to make valentines during "children's church."  But we went to Chili's for lunch and Grandma had a giant heart that said Happy Valentine's Day.  So it was all good.  (This photo demonstrated Tate learning that valuable lesson: Whining is effective).^

Better yet, Aunt Cynto, Uncle Pete & Duncan arrived Sunday afternoon!  They flew in from Denver for a few days to get some sunshine.  I inexplicably failed to get a photo of them, but the girls were all. over. them all day Sunday and Monday. Waving up at the cuties watching me from the balcony as I returned from my walk on the beach.  At sunsetOn Valentine's Day.  If only Michael had been there, it would have been really romantic. Carigan was very proud of making Aunt Cynto's grocery list for her:

We had to head home Monday night, but Aunt Cynto & Uncle Pete drove over to see us on Tuesday.  We drove around looking at houses (daydreaming that they may retire here!) and picked up dinner from Palace Pizza.  And I finally remembered to get a picture.^

Carigan has been taking dance classes at Grant me Grace Studios since January.  We skipped dance last year with all the stress with the move, and I had hoped to find a studio closer to our new house.  Well that worked by all of like two blocks, since the new studio is just a couple blocks closer than our old dance studio, but this one is a Christian studio and they dance to Christian music and I don't have to worry about immodest costumes or booty shaking!  Anna Kate had no desire to do dance this year (cue the my-baby-is-getting-too-big tears), but Carigan is all about it.  I'm usually busy corralling Tate in the lobby, but I did go snap a few pictures of Carigan dancing a few weeks ago.  Notice she insisted on wearing her white tap shoes, even though she does have black shoes.  She likes to switch it up.

Michael was in Gainesville and Apopka the week after the cruise, only coming home for the LCS Gala on Thursday  night.  Then he was in DC the next week.  It was pretty brutal.  I was in survival mode most of that second week.  I had defrosted chicken but then we had dance and basketball on Monday and we were with Wesley at an archery tournament on Tuesday, and I teach on Wednesday nights but I really had to cook the chicken that had been in the fridge for two days.  So I started cooking when we got home from school on Wednesday and we ate dinner at 4:30 so we could get to church on time.  I had been rushing so hard that I stopped for one second and realized this is one of those every day moments that I never think to photograph.  So here it is for posterity... my kids eating dinner, spacing out their requests for refills and texture removal just right so that it's really not worth me sitting down.  I tend to eat after the kids go to bed.  Which is why I'm not skinny.  I blame them.^

Anna Kate and Henry had arranged (graciously informing us moms so we could chauffeur) to have lunch together at Panera after their olympics.  Sherry had to head back to LCS to watch Emmy in the 5th grade olymics, so Henry got to come over for a play date.  He taught Anna Kate how to knit with her toes and they taught Tate how to paint your tongue blue or green with a popsicle:

Friday was Women of Compassion and I was so desperate for a sitter that I let my mom offer to check out of her condo two days early to come to my rescue.  I really really really needed some time away, even just a few hours!  So thankful I got to go!  I got to spend some time in worship, see most of our Guatemala crew and enjoy lunch with Christina and Gretchen.  So great to see all the amazing work going on with Orphan's Heart, The Porch Light, and especially Florida Baptist Children's Homes.  Such powerful ways to serve, right here in Lakeland, literally minutes away.  Such a blessing to get involved. It was a Guatemala trip reunion!  Melissa, me, Laura, Jeanne, Lizette, Toni, Sandee, Christina, Erica and Wendi (below). Brenda and Kristen were there too, but they left before we got a group photo. So great to be together again!

Daddy (mercifully!!) returned home in time for the weekend, and he took Wesley to the State Archery Tournament while I took the rest of the kids to the park.  We could not, for any amount of bribing, get Tate into this swing.  Carigan had a wardrobe malfunction so we had to rush home and change clothes, and then we just walked down to our park until it got dark. But Anna Kate felt slighted that we didn't get to stay at Common Grounds longer, so I promised we'd go back on Sunday... So Sunday after church, I should have been doing laundry and cleaning my house and catching up on this blog that I feel like I'll never catch up on again.  But instead, we walked to the library to pick out books for me to read to Carigan's class on Monday and we had a family outing to the park and we grabbed ice cream at Baskin Robbers.  Hopefully my messy house doesn't mind.

Welsey's First Archery Season

Wesley tried out for LCS's elementary archery team back in January and has been busy practicing every single day after school for the past month. Luke, Kolby and Wesley at their first tournament last Tuesday:

Unfortunately, Michael was out of town and I had my whole crew, and there wasn't a lobby or open area where I cold keep my circus contained for 3+ hours.  So I had to ask Luke's mom if she would adopt Wes for the night so I could bail. Not only did she bail me out, she even sent me pictures!  I don't know what I'd do without the support of my fellow LCS moms... I felt like I was hanging on by a thread last week with so many activities and both Michael and my inlaws out of town, but Chimane and YaYa (our neighbor) both came to my rescue!

As I'd bribed promised the girls, we stopped for happy meals on the way home.  We'd never seen a McDonald's like this before and the kids thought eating under the golden arches was the most exciting thing ever. I put the kids to bed as soon as we got home, and YaYa came over to sit with them while I drove over to Chimane's house to retrieve Wesley around 9:45.  Wesley immediately put himself to bed the second we got home. I remembered five minutes later to go outside and look for Jupiter, and there it was, clear as could be. The camera didn't do a very good job, but that little squiggle above the moon (below) is Jupiter.  It was super bright.  I ran inside to get Wesley (He was the one that informed me that Jupiter would be visible on February 23), but he was already sound asleep.

Tuesday's tournament was just practice for the State Archery Tournament today.  Michael (who mercifully returned from DC just in time!) spent the entire day in Bartow with Wesley.

LCS's high school and middle school teams placed second at State and Wesley's elementary team placed third.  They also won the Spirit & Sportsmanship Award, and Coach Moore won the Coach's Cup for the third year in a row. So proud of this team!

Elementary Olympics x3

Michael's out of town, my inlaws are out of town, Anna Kate's been sick, the week is packed with dance and basketball and archery practices every day, plus Wesley's first archery tournament, the Women of Compassion conference, plus I still teach on Wednesday nights, so of course it was the perfect week for Tate and I to hit the football field for 3+ hours of Elementary Olympics three days this week!

Carigan flying through the obstacle course.^  She was beyond excited to finally be participating in her very own Olympics!  She's spent many many years on the sidelines as the baby/toddler in the stroller! Carigan was the only girl in our group signed up to run the 440.  They told her she could ask a friend to run with her.  She went around sheepishly asking four friends until she gave up.  No one wanted to run!  Ha!  Ross's parents were so sweet and convinced him to run with Carigan.  C ran at a steady pace all the way and never slowed down.  She earned 3rd place of all the girls:

Evelyn, (Tate), Carigan, Selah & Kerrigan ~ These goofy girls are the best of friends!  Love them so much!  Monday, February 22, 2016

Apparently Carigan takes her tug-of-war seriously... she was always seriously scowling when they were losing, jubilant when they won.^ Ready for the ribbon ceremony:

Carigan placed in every event she competed in!  Third in the 440, fourth in the hurdles, and seventh in the obstacle course.  So grateful to have Coach Evans here with us handing out the ribbons again this year! Miss Henry's class took the first place team award. -BELOW- L to R: Isabel, Katie, Kerrigan, Will, Wyatt, (front row) Briana, Evelyn, Isabella, Carigan, Selah, Ben, Lizzy, Emmy and Ross, (back row) Lauren, Maverick, Jackson, Wes, Charlie, Graham, Mrs. Henry, Parker:

Rocking the relay and the Joyful Hearts gang loving on Miss  Marybeth.  Still in denial that Marybeth is graduating this year!!  We were allowed to take our Kindergartners home after the Olympics, so we joined Kerrigan and Isabella and their moms for a celebratory lunch at Moe's. Carigan is proud as punch.  I know this, because she said more than once Monday afternoon, "I'm just so proud of me!"  This is the photo (below) we texted to Daddy in DC.  Athletics first, humility next.

Another day, another 3+ hours on a football field with a toddler to keep out of everyone's way!  Wesley's Olympics were Tuesday, but he was a big help with Tate.  Love this pic of Wesley and Cayden that Daune texted me. Boys taking off on the mile run:

I had texted Shireen to make sure that Olivia would be there.  They had so much fun running around together last year and they had fun again this year.  I love how Tate's way of getting a girl's attention is to just take off running, glancing over his shoulder to make sure she's watching! Tate spent the whole time they tallied the results running the obstacle course.

Mrs. Frost's class placed second and Wesley placed in both the 440 and the one mile. He and Hyatt were both pleased with the results. Anna Kate's Olympics were scheduled for the next day, but mercifully, it rained all day Wednesday so hers got pushed back to Thursday.  I can't tell you how much I needed that break!  This week has been SO exhausting!  But after sweating it out in the heat on Monday and Tuesday, the weather turned suddenly cold on Thursday and we froze our little tushies off! I would have dressed her in pants if I'd had any idea how cold and windy it was going to be!  She did have a jacket, but she took it off in the heat of battle. She placed third in the long jump:

Only girl in her group running the 440!^  She placed 5th for the girls.
AK and Henry have been a bit attached at the hip lately.  They made their own plans for lunch afterward and informed us moms of the plan. Marin & Anna Kate:

Can't believe they're eating popsicles!  It's freezing!!^ Tate made a beeline back down to the football field after eating his popsicle to play on the obstacle course. He ran the whole course again & again & again:

Tate picked up a cup that had fallen and tried to interject himself into the relay competition.  I started to pull him away, but Coach Evans said it was okay and to let him do it.  Tate only got clocked once by an oncoming 2nd grader, but he got right up without missing a beat!  Tough boy. Anna Kate placed in two of her events and Miss Oncu's class came in second overall:

Anna Kate and Henry both got three ribbons - Whoohoo!  Sherry and I took them to Panera for lunch and then Henry got to come over for a play date while Sherry headed back to spend the afternoon watching Emmy in the 5th grade Olympics (at least all my Olympics were on different days!).  Henry taught AK to knit with her feet and they played hide and seek, with the seeker carrying around Tate's portable CD player with microphone so they could announce the game live ESPN-style.  Super cute.  Glad all my kids had so much fun, were such good sports, and were proud of their accomplishments!  We love LCS.
